XANADU II (Richard Martin)

Description

Xanadu II was launched in Wellington in 1984. She is a Spencer 40 design constructed of 3 skins of diagonal ply over stringers and sawn frames, externally fibreglassed.

Key dimensions are:

She is fitted with a 30HP shaft drive Yamnar with 200 litres tankage which provides a cruising range under motor of around 500nm. Total water storage is 500 litres.

Shortly after launching Xanadu set a new record of just over 24 hrs for the annual Wellington to Akaroa race which remained in place for 10 years. During that time she raced out of Wellington, although she did do one trip to the Islands during 1994, and came through the infamous Pacific storm of that season unscathed.

While I have owned her, she has been progressively modified to better suit longer distance sailing with the addition of a furler, inner forstay, gennaker and wind generator.

Her recent activities have involved 2 North Island circumnavigations and one South Island circumnavigation that involved a fascinating exploration of the southern fiords.
